“Words From the CopyDiva” – Why Freelancer Rates Vary
Why Freelancer Rates Vary
Rates tend to vary based upon specialty (graphic design, copywriting, photography, etc.), skill level, demand and experience. Some may charge by the hour or by the project. Others, like photographers, may charge by the day or half-day increments.
Most freelancers figure their rates based upon the following:
• Office or studio space & utilities
• Administrative & non-billable time
• Advertising & marketing
• Professional services (accountant, etc.)
• Office & art supplies, equipment
• Transportation (gas, tolls, parking, flights, etc.)
• Health care, insurance & taxes
• Business licenses
• Invested capital
• Computer supplies, software & training
• Client entertainment & gifts
• And to account for downtime
It’s important to try not to judge a freelancer solely upon their rate, especially if it’s an hourly rate. Why? Because a cheaper-by-the-hour writer, for instance, may not be able to come up with the best end product or end result. But even more importantly, he or she may take longer than a seasoned writer to complete the project, thus, leaving you with a larger bill in the end.
Try to get a complete proposal or estimate upfront before making a decision. And take these other factors into consideration as well:
• Talent level
• Discipline or specialty
• Skills required
• Experience
• Availability
• Speed
• Work/product/service value
Even if cost is the biggest determining factor in your decision, keep in mind that you often get what you pay for. Be sure to review portfolio samples and research your talent prospect upfront.
