Are You Selling Your Photography in the Dollar Bin?

Have you ever seen a 30-foot inflatable gorilla in front of a high-end car dealership? How about a clown holding a sign and waving at the passing traffic?

Probably not — but I bet you have seen these things in front of a used car dealership.

Step back and think about those scenarios and ask yourself, “Which one am I?”

Are you lowering your prices to attract bargain hunters at all costs — or are you focused on building a customer base that will value and be loyal…continue reading at B.S.R.

Everyone has a different approach to how they process information. Here is a little sample of how I work…

As a photographer I have tons of creative ideas running around in my head at any given moment and sometimes they transpire into reality. This pushes me to get ides from my mind onto paper and from paper into the camera. Below you will find a few images that have turned from sketch books or drawings in Photoshop on a Wacom into personal photo shoots that I have created for my portfolio. I laugh as I look back at some of these sketches because of how rough the original idea is that it’s a wonder that they have even made it past the drawing board. Most of them work out, others are epic fails as you will see with the pistachios but that is part of the creative process!

Epic fail below…

What do you do to process ideas?

Keep it simple, Stupid! We have all heard this saying before, here is an example of how it was carried out on a recent editorial photo shoot.

A few weeks back I had an assignment to photograph a profile of a local hair stylist here in Kansas City. As I was brainstorming ideas on how I can come up with a fun portrait to showcase the subject I also had to figure out a lighting scheme without bringing in a crap-ton of gear. When shooting in certain locations (her living room for example) you don’t want to become invasive with bringing a bulky tripod, bunch of light stands or any of the other pieces of gear that could be dug out of a photographers trunk so I came up with this uber simple lighting plan.

What I used for this shoot was a camera, flash, light stand, silver reflector and a set of pocket wizards.

From the sketch you can see that the flash was on a light stand pointing down with the silver reflector placed below the subject faces at waist level. The flash was set 2 feet above camera and I stood directly under the flash. As soon as the shoot was done it took me less than 5 minutes to tear down, pack up and get out of the way so the hair show could start. Easy, stupid simple and didn’t require much hardware.
